Two car parks in Cardiff city centre will close permanently within weeks, Transport for Wales has announced. The car parks, located at Cardiff Central railway station, will shut from Wednesday, July 1, as part of a massive redevelopment of the station.
Redevelopment Details
The £140m redevelopment of Cardiff Central station was approved last year. It aims to increase capacity, improve movement around the station, and enhance accessibility for those with reduced mobility. The project also includes better waiting areas, new shops, and cycle storage. The station will remain open during construction, which is expected to be completed by 2028.
Car Parks Closing
Transport for Wales (TfW) confirmed that the Penarth Road car park on the south side of the station and the Riverside (Fish Jetty) car park adjacent to platform 0 will close permanently from July 1. TfW stated: “The closure of the car parks will allow us to start carrying out preparatory works so we can move forward with the start of construction works for the planned enhancements at Cardiff Central station and Cardiff Crossrail.”
New Car Park Already Open
A new multi-storey car park with nearly 700 spaces opened nearby in January. Cardiff Central Quay car park, accessible from Penarth Road and Crawshaw Street, is located just a short walk from the station. TfW has advised users of the old car parks to allow extra time to reach the station.
Parking charges at the new facility are £4.95 for one hour, with a daily rate of £18. Weekly season tickets cost £68.40, monthly tickets £256.80, and annual tickets £2,666.40. The car park has 681 spaces, including 28 electric vehicle charging spaces at £0.48 per kWh. It also features a drop-off area, bike racks, and a planned 24-hour car rental scheme.
Cardiff Central Quay multi-storey is managed by Network Rail and operated by APCOA.
Advice for Users
TfW advised: “Please allow plenty of time to travel to and park in the multi-storey, and factor in time to get from the multi-storey to the station. Please also allow extra time for pick-up and drop-off, as the pedestrian route will also be longer. If you normally use the Riverside (Fish Jetty) car park (including for pick-up and drop-off), please allow additional time to travel to and park in the multi-storey car park on the opposite side of the station.”
TfW added that they will share information with customers soon, including details on the recommended safe pedestrian route.
