BYD Seal 6 DM-i Review: 935-Mile Range & Dog-Friendly Design
BYD Seal 6 DM-i: 935-Mile Range Hybrid Tested

Steve Fowler, Electric Vehicles Editor, published his review of the new BYD Seal 6 DM-i on Friday, 28 November 2024, putting this advanced plug-in hybrid through its paces on British roads.

A New Benchmark in Hybrid Technology and Range

While some cars shout for attention, the BYD Seal 6 DM-i quietly showcases a monumental leap in plug-in hybrid technology. Available as a sleek saloon or a practical Touring estate, this family car integrates BYD's sophisticated Super Hybrid DM-i system to deliver an astonishing claimed range of up to 935 miles on a single tank and charge.

Fowler tested the Touring version, noting its handsome, well-proportioned design and an interior that punches well above its weight. The cabin boasts excellent quality and finish, with neat lighting and solid materials that create a genuinely premium feel at a mainstream price point.

Performance, Charging, and Real-World Usability

The heart of the Seal 6 DM-i is its deeply impressive powertrain. It uses BYD's own Blade Battery and a 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with a front electric motor. The system intelligently prioritises electric driving, with the Comfort trim's larger 19kWh battery offering up to 65 miles of pure-electric range, enough for most daily commutes without using any petrol.

Charging is swift. Comfort models support 26kW DC fast charging, enabling a 30-80% top-up in just 23 minutes. A full charge on a 6.6kW AC home wallbox takes around three hours. The car also features Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability, allowing you to power gadgets or equipment directly from the vehicle.

On the move, the transition between electric and petrol power is seamless. The CVT transmission is quiet, and acceleration is brisk, with the Comfort model hitting 0-62 mph in 8.5 seconds. The ride is firm but sporty, and the car remains refined and quiet at motorway speeds, though some tyre noise was noted in the Touring version.

Interior Space, Tech, and Practicality for Families

Inside, the Seal 6 DM-i feels upmarket. The old rotating screen has been replaced by a fixed display—a 15.6-inch unit in Comfort trim—that is crisp, responsive, and runs the latest BYD OS. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard.

The cabin is practical and thoughtfully designed. Front seats are comfortable and power-adjustable, while rear passengers get good headroom but limited foot space. The Touring estate's boot is a standout feature, offering a class-leading 500 litres of space that expands to 1,535 litres with the seats folded, making it genuinely dog-friendly and ideal for active families.

Technology is extensive across both Boost and Comfort trims, including a comprehensive suite of driver-assistance systems like adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping, blind-spot assist, and a 360-degree camera.

Price, Running Costs, and Verdict

The BYD Seal 6 DM-i presents compelling value. Prices start from £33,990 for the saloon and £34,990 for the Touring. With a claimed fuel economy of up to 188 mpg, running costs are exceptionally low, especially if you primarily use electric power.

The car is backed by a six-year vehicle warranty and an eight-year battery warranty. Steve Fowler's verdict is clear: despite a slightly firm ride and some road noise, the BYD Seal 6 DM-i is a refined, high-quality, and incredibly efficient plug-in hybrid that feels a class above its price, making it another winner from BYD for families and long-distance drivers alike.
