BMW 3 Series Crowned UK's Best Used Car, Beating Jaguar I-Pace
BMW 3 Series named UK's best used car of the year

In a decisive verdict that highlights shifting consumer trends, motoring specialists from Auto Express have named the BMW 3 Series as the undisputed best used car available in the UK today.

Unanimous Decision in a Challenging Market

With the British motor industry navigating persistent challenges and the ongoing cost of living crisis, more drivers than ever are seeking value in the second-hand car market. This surge in demand has pushed prices up for some models, yet experts confirm that excellent deals are still to be found. It was against this backdrop that the Auto Express panel convened to identify the standout used car for 2025.

The assessment was thorough, considering not only how each vehicle performed when it was new but also incorporating the real-world ownership experiences of drivers across the country. After careful deliberation, the choice was clear and unanimous.

Why the BMW 3 Series Took the Top Spot

Explaining the panel's decision, writer Alex Ingram emphasised that the 3 Series's victory was about more than just its renowned driving dynamics. The key to its success lies in its remarkable versatility.

"Whether you're in the market for a fuel-sipping diesel or a fire-breathing M3 - or anything in between - the 3 Series line-up has you covered," Ingram stated.

He further highlighted the breadth of choice, noting that plug-in hybrid variants offer electric-only capability for local trips, while six-cylinder petrol models deliver smooth and powerful performance. This is complemented by a range of available body styles.

"But whichever derivative you go for, the rest of the package leaves you feeling like there's no compromise at all," Ingram added. "Ride and handling are as good as it gets, making even the most affordable models a joy to drive."

Jaguar's Electric Contender and Market Outlook

The BMW's win was not without stiff competition. It narrowly beat Jaguar's all-electric I-Pace, which secured a commendable second place in the overall rankings. The Jaguar also claimed two specific category wins, being named the best used electric car and the best used executive car.

Commenting on the broader used car market earlier this year, Mike Hawes, CEO of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), linked its health directly to new car sales.

"Growth in the used car market is good news given it is where most drivers buy their next vehicle - but their choice ultimately depends on thriving new car demand," Hawes said. He also pointed out that the recovery in new car sales has enabled nearly 100,000 buyers to purchase nearly-new vehicles less than a year old in 2025, boosting economic activity and improving access to more affordable, low-emission cars.

This announcement from Auto Express follows another major industry award, with car buying platform Carwow naming the Chinese-made Chery Tiggo 8 as its new Car of the Year, a model noted for being around £50,000 cheaper than a similarly-styled BMW competitor.
