UAE Accelerates Oil Pipeline to Bypass Iran-Closed Strait of Hormuz
UAE Fast-Tracks Oil Pipeline Bypassing Strait of Hormuz

The United Arab Emirates is accelerating the construction of a new oil pipeline, aiming to double its export capacity through Fujairah by 2027. This project is designed to significantly bypass the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway effectively closed by Iran since 28 February following attacks by the US and Israel.

Impact of the Strait of Hormuz Closure

The closure of the Strait of Hormuz has disrupted approximately a fifth of global oil supplies, causing energy price surges and fears of an economic downturn. Markets are closely monitoring tensions in the region, with Brent crude prices climbing as the possibility of strikes on Iran looms.

Fast-Tracked Pipeline Project

Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed has directed the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) to fast-track the West-East Pipeline project. The UAE already operates the Abu Dhabi Crude Oil Pipeline, which has a capacity of up to 1.8 million barrels per day, enabling it to export crude outside the strait. The new pipeline will further enhance the UAE's ability to circumvent the chokepoint.
