Manchester United will receive a portion of Marseille's profits if they sell Mason Greenwood this summer, but the windfall could be far less than expected. The 24-year-old, who broke through United's youth system in 2018, scored 35 goals in 129 games before allegations of rape in 2022 were dropped the following year. He joined Getafe on loan in 2023 and was sold to Marseille for around £26.7 million, with a sell-on clause giving United 40% of any future fee.
UEFA Sanctions Threaten Marseille
With 48 goals and 17 assists in 81 appearances for Marseille, Greenwood should command a hefty fee. However, UEFA has warned Marseille about compliance with financial regulations, threatening a one-year European ban and an £8.6 million fine if they fail to meet their 2026/27 football earnings target. This could force Marseille to sell key players cheaply, including Greenwood.
Roma Interested
Roma are the most interested party, reportedly offering £34 million, including a £4.3 million loan fee, £21 million option to buy, and £8.6 million in bonuses. Marseille are unconvinced, seeking at least £47 million. A £52 million release clause kicks in from July 1, but Roma are hesitant to pay the full price. Roma themselves were fined £5.2 million for financial breaches, limiting their spending.
If Marseille secure a £47 million fee, United would receive £18.8 million. If the £52 million clause is triggered, United would be about £2 million better off. However, UEFA sanctions could force a cheaper deal, reducing United's expected windfall.
