A woman has shared her mortifying experience of falling asleep on a stranger's shoulder during a long-haul flight, after being overwhelmed with grief following her father's death. The incident occurred as she travelled from California to Australia, leaving behind friends and family.
The woman, who wished to remain anonymous, described feeling exhausted and emotional as she boarded the plane. She was assigned a seat in the last row, next to the toilet and galley, and found herself next to a large, bodybuilder-type man who was already encroaching on her space.
Overwhelmed, she burst into tears. The man responded by handing her a packet of tissues and motioning for her to rest her head on his shoulder, saying, 'Mama, sleep' in heavily accented English. He then draped a blanket around her, and she quickly fell asleep, waking up close to home.
The woman admitted she initially made a snap judgment that the situation would be uncomfortable, but instead found the man to be the loveliest person she could have sat next to. She said his quiet comfort made her flight far more tolerable and eased her transition through grief.
The story serves as a reminder of the kindness of strangers, with the woman expressing gratitude for the man's empathy and generosity, which restored her faith in human kindness.
