A holiday voyage to one of Australia's most pristine tropical destinations ended in tragedy this week when a woman died after a suspected encounter with a lizard on Lizard Island.
Cruise Ship Emergency
The incident occurred during what should have been an idyllic expedition to the Great Barrier Reef. The female passenger, whose identity has not been publicly released, was travelling aboard a Coral Expeditions cruise ship when the medical emergency unfolded.
According to reports, the vessel made an urgent diversion to Cairns on Tuesday after the woman's condition deteriorated significantly. Queensland Ambulance Service confirmed they met the ship at Trinity Wharf, where paramedics attempted emergency treatment.
Island Paradise Turned Deadly
Lizard Island, located approximately 150 miles north of Cairns, is renowned for its spectacular coral reefs and luxury resorts. The island gets its name from the numerous monitor lizards that inhabit the area, which are generally considered harmless to humans.
"It is believed the woman may have been bitten by a lizard," a Queensland Ambulance Service spokesperson stated, though investigations into the exact circumstances continue.
