The Economist Intelligence Unit's 2026 Global Liveability Index has placed two Australian cities – Melbourne and Sydney – among the top five most liveable cities in the world, reaffirming Australia's reputation as an exceptional place to live.
Melbourne ranked third overall, thanks to its high culture and environment score of 96, one of the highest in the index. Residents describe the city as a big city that behaves like a village. "Melbourne is a big city that somehow behaves like a village," said Anne Marie Lennon.
Sydney came fourth, continuing Australia's strong showing. Both cities offer excellent healthcare, education and infrastructure, making them attractive for residents and visitors alike.
The ranking assessed 173 cities worldwide across stability, healthcare, culture, education and infrastructure to identify those offering the highest quality of life.
