Eastbourne, the East Sussex seaside resort often hailed as one of the UK's sunniest spots, has a less enviable distinction: it ranks among the country's most polluted towns. According to the World Health Organisation, Eastbourne has the third-highest levels of very small particulates in the air and the seventh-highest of slightly larger ones, placing it on par with London and marginally worse than Scunthorpe, a major steel town. Only Glasgow is decidedly more polluted.
The town's air quality issues are surprising given its coastal location and lack of heavy industry. With a population of around 100,000, Eastbourne's pollution primarily comes from smog drifting over from London and continental Europe. The problem persists despite EU air pollution laws that have pushed for some improvements.
Eastbourne has undergone a demographic shift in recent years, attracting younger residents and gaining a reputation as a 'groovier' destination. The band Toploader was formed there. However, the town's air quality remains a concern, with a Visit Eastbourne brochure boasting 'Breathe it in' on its cover.
While Eastbourne is often cited as the sunniest town in Britain, neighbouring Hastings also claims that title. The pollution issue has led to calls for action, though local authorities face challenges from cross-border smog.
