In the United Kingdom, adult passports typically remain valid for a period of ten years, while child passports are valid for five years. The cost for an adult passport application is £94.50 when submitted online, or £107 for a paper form. For child passports, the fee is £61.50 online and £74 via paper application.

Processing Times and Urgent Services
Standard processing for a new or replacement passport generally takes approximately three weeks. However, for those requiring expedited service, a one-week premium option is available. This urgent service costs £145 for a child's passport and £158 for a 54-page frequent traveller passport.
The Passport Office strongly advises individuals to verify current processing times before submitting an application. A key reminder included in their guidance is: "Do not book travel until you have a valid passport - your new passport will not have the same number as your old one." This caution aims to prevent complications arising from passport number discrepancies during travel bookings.
Specific Requirements for Child Passport Applications
Applications for child passports must be submitted by someone with parental responsibility. It is mandatory to provide details for both parents during the application process. If one parent's details cannot be supplied, the applicant must provide a valid explanation, such as being the sole parent named on the birth certificate or having adopted the child independently.
Additionally, for individuals aged 11 and above, signing the passport is a compulsory requirement. A passport remains invalid for travel unless it is properly signed, highlighting another essential step in the preparation process.
