The United Kingdom has been named the world's safest travel destination for 2026, according to the latest Global Peace Index. The index, which ranks 163 nations across 23 indicators including military expenditure, ongoing conflict, homicide rates and perceptions of safety, placed the UK at the top for the first time.
The UK's rise to the top spot reflects improvements in several key areas, including a reduction in violent crime and enhanced counter-terrorism measures. The country also benefits from strong institutions, high social trust and good relations with neighbours, which contribute to its overall peacefulness.
Residents and travel experts point to the UK's diverse landscapes, from the Scottish Highlands to the Cornish coast, as well as its rich history and cultural attractions, as factors that make it a safe and appealing destination. 'The UK offers a unique blend of safety, heritage and natural beauty that is hard to match,' said a spokesperson for VisitBritain.
Visitors are encouraged to explore beyond London, with recommendations including the Lake District, Edinburgh and the Welsh countryside. The UK's efficient public transport and widespread use of English also make it easy for international travellers to navigate.
The Global Peace Index, created by the Institute for Economics & Peace, has been published annually since 2007. This year's report noted that overall global peacefulness has deteriorated for the 12th consecutive year, with 99 countries experiencing declines. However, the UK's performance demonstrates that stability and safety can be maintained even in a turbulent world.
