Cambridgeshire Couple Hospitalised in Philippines After Scooter Crash

A couple from St Ives, Cambridgeshire, have been left stranded in a Philippine hospital after a horrific scooter accident just two days into their dream holiday. Daniel Guz, 49, and Julia Sek, 45, were on a tour of El Nido on Palawan Island when their bike slipped on a sandy or oily patch, sending them skidding over 50 metres off the road.

Daniel suffered a ruptured spleen, a broken leg and hip, while Julia broke both arms. They were initially taken to a local hospital but were transferred to St Luke's Medical Center in Manila, 400 miles away, as their injuries were too severe for local treatment. Daniel has undergone two surgeries—one to remove his spleen and another to repair his leg and hip—while Julia had metal implants inserted in both arms.

The couple, who had planned a two-week trip to celebrate Daniel's upcoming 50th birthday, are now unsure when they can return to the UK. Their medical treatment is covered by insurance, but they will need private physiotherapy and potentially further care upon their return. A GoFundMe page has been set up by a friend to help with costs.

Daniel, a lorry driver and father of one, said: 'We had two days of fantastic holiday and we've been in hospital ever since. But the good thing is, we didn't die, and we are together. We got a second chance.' The couple are in contact with the Polish Ambassador to arrange their return to the UK.
