During the recent UK heatwave, when temperatures soared to 37°C, journalist Shania King-Soyza discovered a tranquil beach destination that remained surprisingly uncrowded. Folkestone's Sunny Sands Beach, located on the Kent coast, offered golden sand and peaceful seclusion even as much of the country sought relief from the heat.
A Spontaneous Escape from the Heat
Like many Britons without air conditioning, King-Soyza found the heat in London unbearable. She and her mother decided on a spontaneous weekday trip to the coast, choosing Folkestone over more popular spots like Brighton or Bournemouth. They visited on a Thursday evening around 5pm, when children had finished school and most workers had ended their day, yet the beach remained spacious and quiet.
Sunny Sands Beach: A Hidden Gem
Sunny Sands Beach is Folkestone's best-known beach, prized for its rare stretch of golden sand on Kent's predominantly pebbled coastline. Located beside the harbour, it offers a traditional seaside experience with safe swimming, family-friendly facilities, and easy access to the town centre. During the heatwave, there were people sunbathing, playing games, and splashing in the water, but plenty of space remained, with some corners feeling practically empty.
Dog Restrictions in Summer
According to Cotswolds Outdoor, from May 1 to September 30, dogs are not permitted on Sunny Sands Beach between 10am and 8pm. However, they are welcome on other parts of Folkestone Beach year-round, provided they are under control. During her winter visit, King-Soyza saw well-behaved dogs roaming freely, but none were present during the summer heatwave.
Folkestone's Diverse Beaches
Folkestone is home to several beaches. Just east of Sunny Sands is Folkestone's main beach, a long pebble shoreline ideal for walking and wave watching. Adjacent is Lower Leas Coastal Park, the largest free adventure play area in the South East, with public art installations and views across the English Channel. Further along is Mermaid Beach, backed by cliffs and known for clean water and a peaceful atmosphere. Sandgate Beach, a relaxed pebble beach, is perfect for dog walking and sunset watching over the Channel.
Easy Access from London
Getting to Folkestone Beach is straightforward. By car, it is easily reached via the M20, with the journey from London taking around two hours. By train, Folkestone Central offers regular high-speed services from London St Pancras in about an hour, followed by a 20-minute walk or a short bus or taxi ride to the beach.
