A man who climbed 460ft up a pillar of Melbourne's Bolte Bridge to paint graffiti has sparked a six-hour standoff with police, issuing demands for lower taxes and a peanut butter and jam sandwich from his lofty perch. The unidentified individual, clad head to toe in black, scaled the iconic bridge early on July 7, 2026, adding a mural of the city's famous Pam the Bird tag to the skyline before refusing to come down.
Standoff and Demands
According to reports, the man remained atop the pillar, partially obscured by clouds due to the altitude, as emergency responders watched from below fearing for his safety. He shared a list of demands on a social media account for Pam the Bird, initially calling for lower taxes. In a video clip, he stated, 'I'm not coming down until they lower the taxes. I'm f***ing sick of paying that s**t.' When asked which taxes, the account replied, 'All of them.'
At about 8am local time, he added a demand for a peanut butter and jam sandwich and a glass of milk, later posting a masked photo with the caption 'patiently waiting for my pb & j sandwich.' He also requested a 'blankey' to combat the cold, as Melbourne's temperature dropped to 3°C that morning, likely much colder at 460ft.
Traffic Chaos and Descent
The protest caused significant traffic chaos on the Bolte Bridge and M1 motorway. At one point, the man abseiled partway down to wave at onlookers before climbing back up. He later announced he would descend peacefully at noon, stating he was waiting for the tide to go out. Sea level sits 95ft below his perch atop one of the bridge's gateway pillars.
It is unclear how he reached the top, but video showed him abseiling to paint. The Pam the Bird tag has appeared around Melbourne since 2023, including on Flinders Street Station and the 'International Gateway' display along the M1. The man remained at the top at the time of reporting.
