Hotel Expert Warns Against Booking Rooms Ending in '01'

Choosing the wrong hotel room could ruin your holiday, according to travel expert Javier Sobrino, founder of Spanish platform Descubriendo Viajes. After a decade of travelling across Spain and staying in hundreds of hotels, Sobrino advises never to book a room ending in '01'. These rooms are typically located next to elevators, stairwells, and service areas, making them the noisiest spots on the floor.

The noise from these rooms isn't limited to daytime hours. Sobrino explains that guests in room '01' will hear late-night revellers, early risers, and the constant ping of elevator doors. Housekeeping staff also start their rounds early, rolling carts past the door and restocking supplies in nearby service areas, disrupting sleep.

Hotels rarely highlight which rooms are noisier when booking online, as every room needs to be filled. Sobrino warns that rooms above or below restaurants, bars, or facing busy streets can also be problematic. For families, rooms near stairwells with heavy metal doors that slam loudly should be avoided, especially with young children.

To secure a quieter room, Sobrino recommends calling the hotel directly after booking online. Be friendly and mention any special occasion, even if it's just looking forward to the break. A simple request for a quiet room away from elevators often works. Being polite and specific helps front desk staff accommodate preferences, especially if you are a loyalty program member.
