Tucktonia, a cherished theme park and model village in Christchurch, Dorset, ceased operations in 1986 after ten years. The site has since been transformed into a housing development called The Meridians, featuring private residences and retirement flats.
A Decade of Attractions
Opened on May 23, 1976, Tucktonia was described as 'the greatest little Britain in the world' and 'Europe's largest model landscape'. Located near the River Stour, it quickly became a regional landmark, attracting roughly half a million visitors annually and employing about eighty staff.
The park was part of the 21-acre Tuckton Park Leisure Complex, owned by British racing driver Harry Stiller. Inspired by the Madurodam model village in The Hague and the Bekonscot Model Village in Buckinghamshire, Stiller created a four-acre attraction with over 200 miniature models of UK landmarks, including Big Ben, Stonehenge, a working Tower Bridge, and Buckingham Palace.
Celebrity Visits and Film Fame
Tucktonia hosted several famous figures, including actor Jon Pertwee and comedian Tommy Cooper in 1978. The BBC's Multi-Coloured Swap Shop was broadcast live from the park with presenters Maggie Philbin and Keith Chegwin. In 1985, the site served as a filming location for the sci-fi horror film Lifeforce, directed by Tobe Hooper.
Closure and Redevelopment
Several factors contributed to Tucktonia's closure. The opening of Alton Towers in April 1980 is widely believed to have impacted visitor numbers. Plans for a roller coaster were reportedly refused planning permission, and a £10 million housing and leisure complex was approved in 1985. The park closed in 1986, and the site later became The Olde Colonial pub, then Bar Max, before being demolished in 2003 and redeveloped as The Meridians housing estate.
Speaking to the BBC in 2010, Harry Stiller reflected: "When I think about it, I think of the hundreds of thousands of people that had the pleasure of Tucktonia – the happiest days of my life."
