The Monachyle Mhor Hotel in Balquhidder, Perthshire, offers nine different forms of accommodation across its 2,000-acre private estate, ensuring a unique experience on every visit. From stylish courtyard rooms to a rustic cabin and even a restored showman's wagon, this boutique hotel caters to a variety of preferences.
Nestled in the Highland hills and overlooking Loch Voil, the hotel is part of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. It also provides a range of experiences, including drinks masterclasses, a wine safari, a riverside sauna, farm tours and wild fishing, making it ideal for a relaxing weekend trip or hosting events.
Feature Rooms and Courtyard
Located in the main building are six feature rooms, described as the "most spacious and luxurious" spaces the hotel offers. Each room is individually designed, featuring striking artwork and original milking stools, along with king or queen-size beds and modern bathrooms. The Tack Room is wheelchair-accessible, while Midnight offers twin slipper baths. Granary, Coach House and Sawmill have private steam rooms.
The Courtyard offers a slightly more rustic stay with five spacious rooms, each incorporating twisted oak and well-worn leather. All rooms include en-suite bathrooms, double or king-sized beds, televisions, tea and coffee, organic toiletries, robes, slippers and hairdryers, with some featuring fireplaces.
Farmhouse, Cabin and Wagon
The Mhor farmhouse, previously the owners' home, now contains four rooms reflecting the hotel's signature aesthetic. Each has snug beds, bathrobes, TV, tea and coffee, and en-suite bathrooms, with whitewashed walls and wood panelling creating a cosy atmosphere.
The restored Ferry Cabin, originally a terminal for the Port Appin-Isle of Lismore ferry, offers quirky treasures and uninterrupted glen views. Next door, the reclaimed Bothy provides a fully equipped kitchen and living area, though bathroom facilities are a minute's walk away in the main hotel. Both sleep up to four guests with a minimum two-night stay, and visitors can self-cater or book meals at the hotel.
Restored by owner and chef Tom Lewis, the wagon was originally a 1950s Pilot Panther showman's wagon. Available for £170 a night, it offers views across Loch Doine, Loch Voil and the Fathan Glinne mountain range, with cooking facilities, a wood-burning stove, an outdoor wood-fired bath, a pizza oven and a private decking area.
Treehouse, Corr, Tiny House and Cottage
The "In the Trees" accommodation spans three floors, allowing guests to perch among the trees with a private wood-burning hot tub. It sleeps up to four guests at £340 per night on a bed and breakfast basis, with a minimum two-night stay and no pets allowed.
The Corr Cabin, priced at £220 per night based on two people sharing, was designed by an Edinburgh-based company. It features black timber, a wood-burning stove, a fully equipped kitchen, a king-sized bed and an en-suite bathroom, offering mountain views and peace.
The Tiny House, also £220 a night, combines sustainable design with understated luxury. It includes a double bed, a kitchenette with gas cooker, a wood-burning stove, a full bathroom with shower, a private deck and a cosy fire pit.
Calair Cottage is a three-bedroom self-catering property in the heart of Balquhidder, set beside the Balvaig River with views of Ben Vorlich and Kirkton Glen. It features a log fire, comfortable beds, cosy living spaces, a wood-fired hot tub, a fire pit and comfortable seating, making it an idyllic retreat for families and friends.
