HG vs Astonish mould spray: Which one really works?
HG vs Astonish mould spray: Which one really works?

A bathroom mould spray comparison found that the pricier HG product removed mould with virtually no scrubbing, while the budget Astonish spray required multiple attempts and considerable effort.

Nicola Roy, a Spare Time writer, tested the two sprays back-to-back around her bath and shower. The area had been neglected for weeks, leaving mould on the silicone sealant and grout.

Budget option put to the test

The Astonish Mould And Mildew Blast, which retails for approximately £1.49 at stores like Home Bargains, was the more affordable choice. The instructions advise spraying the affected area generously, leaving it for a couple of minutes, then scrubbing thoroughly.

The spray, described as having an 'Apple Burst' scent, performed well but had one drawback. It took three attempts and a considerable amount of scrubbing to fully shift the mould. The first wipe barely made a dent, so a second coat was applied, and a spare toothbrush was used to work into the silicone.

Pricier spray proves more effective

The HG spray, which cost £4.30 at Savers, was described as a fast-acting chlorine bleach spray that eliminates mould without scrubbing. It was applied generously to the mould in the corner of the bath area and left for half an hour.

On return, the worst of the mould had entirely disappeared without any intervention. A quick once-over with a toothbrush removed the last remnants, leaving the area looking as good as new. The sole drawback noted was its potency, which may not suit homes with young children or bathrooms without a window.

Despite the higher cost, the HG spray was deemed worth the additional expense.
