Under the system, most non-EU citizens, including UK nationals, must register their biometric information upon entry, leading to queues of up to five hours.
Airlines and airports have reported that some flights are departing half-empty as passengers miss their departures. They are urging the authorities to suspend the checks during the peak summer holiday period to ease congestion.
The delays have sparked frustration among holidaymakers, who are advised to arrive at airports much earlier than usual. Travel experts recommend allowing at least three hours for check-in and border procedures.
