A holidaymaker has died after plunging 50 metres (160ft) from a cliff in Cornwall. The man, 52, from Basingstoke, Hampshire, was on a family holiday and fell while walking with his wife at Mullion on the Lizard Peninsula at about 7pm yesterday.
He was airlifted to the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro, where he was pronounced dead. Police are treating the death as accidental and have informed the coroner.
The coastguard has warned tourists to take extra care on cliff paths over the bank holiday weekend, following a week of heavy rain in the region. A watch officer said: 'There has been a lot of rain in Cornwall over the last week and people need to be very careful when they are out walking. The rain has made the paths very very slippery and they can be treacherous.'
It is not known whether the wet conditions contributed to the fatal fall, but the coastguard urged visitors to remain vigilant on potentially treacherous paths.
