Two US tourists have died after their inflatable boat capsized at Iguazu Falls, on the border between Brazil and Argentina. Argentine officials reported that the boat hit rocks near the base of the waterfall, causing the accident.
The victims were identified by the Associated Press as Laura Matejik Eberts, 25, and Philip Musgrove, 70. Five others were rescued but sustained injuries, including two Germans, one American, one Colombian and one Argentine.
Rescue efforts involved several police launches and a helicopter. Daniel Costra, an Argentine National Parks official, stated that it had been over a decade since such an incident occurred at the site.
Iguazu Falls, a major tourist attraction comprising 275 waterfalls along a 3km stretch of the Iguazu river, draws hundreds of visitors daily for boat trips to its base.
