Toddler in Critical Condition After Plunging from TUI Cruise Ship in Madeira
A two-year-old child is reportedly fighting for their life after a horrific fall from a TUI Cruises vessel while it was docked in the Portuguese archipelago of Madeira. The toddler, described as a foreign national traveling with parents, suffered severe injuries in the incident.
Emergency Response and Hospitalisation
The alarming incident occurred this morning when the cruise liner Mein Schiff 7 was stationed in Funchal, the capital of Madeira. Portuguese media reports indicate the child fell between 10 and 13 feet, with the exact circumstances remaining under active investigation.
Emergency services were swiftly mobilised, including Red Cross officials and a specialised rapid intervention medical team. The child was stabilised at the scene before being urgently transported to Dr Nelio Mendonca Hospital in Funchal.
Hospital sources have revealed the toddler's injuries are very serious and their condition remains critical, with life hanging in the balance. Medical staff are providing intensive care as the young patient battles for survival.
The Cruise Ship and Itinerary Details
The vessel involved is the Mein Schiff 7, one of the newest ships in the TUI Cruises fleet with capacity for nearly 3,000 passengers. At the time of the incident, the ship was carrying 2,936 passengers and 1,037 crew members.
The cruise is currently on a seven-day round trip that began in Gran Canaria on April 20 and is scheduled to conclude on the same island next Monday. The itinerary, known as Cruise Atlantic Islands, included a 38-hour stop in Funchal with an overnight stay.
Funchal Port officials had earlier announced the arrival of two cruise ships bringing approximately 4,000 passengers and 2,000 crew members to the port. The Mein Schiff 7 was the first to arrive, having traveled from Las Palmas before its planned departure for La Palma.
Official Statements and Investigation
The Administration of the Ports of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (APRAM) confirmed a child had been transported to hospital following an incident aboard the cruise ship while docked. Their statement acknowledged the activation of the Regional Integrated Medical Emergency System but provided no details about the child's age, nationality, or specific circumstances.
An internal investigation has reportedly been launched to determine how the tragic accident occurred. Authorities are examining safety protocols and circumstances surrounding the fall as the cruise industry faces scrutiny over passenger security measures.
This marked the final call of the season in Madeira for the Mein Schiff 7, with a return visit scheduled for November. The incident has cast a shadow over what should have been a routine port visit, raising questions about safety procedures aboard modern cruise vessels.
