Tiny UK island with just 3 residents seeks new workers

A secluded 'holy' island in the Irish Sea, home to just three permanent residents, is advertising three job vacancies. Bardsey Island, known in Welsh as Ynys Enlli, is seeking staff for both permanent and seasonal roles, offering a unique opportunity to escape the daily grind.

The mile-long island, dubbed the 'Island of 20,000 Saints', is believed to be the final resting place of thousands of pilgrims. It was recognised as Europe's first dark sky sanctuary and is renowned for its wildlife and dramatic landscapes, attracting seals, Manx shearwaters, porpoises and dolphins.

One opening is for an assistant visitor warden to greet tourists arriving by boat in summer, running from March to October. Siân Stacey, chief officer at Ynys Enlli, said: 'We're looking for someone who wants to join our team based on Enlli to welcome visitors to the island throughout the season in 2026.' The assistant will support wardens in preparing visitors' houses and welcoming day visitors.

A second position, which can be undertaken both on and off the island, involves working as a project officer to increase engagement with communities and audiences. The final vacancy is for a conservation farmer, offering the chance to relocate with family for up to five years. The role entails looking after 200 sheep and 20-30 Welsh black cattle while helping to maintain the land.

Prospective candidates are encouraged to visit the island's website for further details.
