Deadly Waves Strike Holiday Island
A violent tidal surge on the Spanish island of Tenerife has resulted in three fatalities and left fifteen people injured after they were pulled into the Atlantic Ocean. The series of tragic incidents occurred on Saturday along the coast of the popular holiday destination, prompting emergency services to issue urgent safety advice.
Details of the Incidents
Emergency services confirmed the casualties took place in four separate locations. A rescue helicopter airlifted a man from the water at La Guancha, on the island's north coast. Despite the swift response, he was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
In a separate event in the south, a man was discovered floating on the beach at El Cabezo. Lifeguards and medical personnel attempted to resuscitate him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The third fatality occurred in the northern resort of Puerto de la Cruz, where a massive wave swept ten people into the sea. A woman suffered a fatal heart attack during this incident. Three others from the same group sustained serious injuries and were transported to hospital for treatment.
Official Warnings and Safety Advice
Authorities for the Canary Islands, the Spanish archipelago located off the west coast of Africa, had previously issued warnings about the dangerous tidal surge and strong winds. They explicitly advised the public not to walk along coastal paths and to avoid putting themselves at risk by attempting to take photographs or videos of the treacherous sea conditions.
