A law student cut short her £550 Jet2 package holiday after claiming she was "bitten 100 times" by bed bugs. Mobina Atashi, 22, from Manchester, flew to Bulgaria's Black Sea coast on July 12 for a seven-night break, but abandoned her trip after just two nights.
Disturbing discovery at the hotel
Arriving at her hotel at midnight, Mobina said the room was in poor condition but decided to sleep before complaining. Hours later, she was woken by an itching feeling and found bed bugs crawling through her bedding, with red bumps emerging across her skin. Footage she filmed appears to show insects scuttling across her sheets and duvet.
At 5am, she went to reception, showed staff the videos, and was moved to another room, which she says was also dirty. Hotel staff told her the bites looked like an allergic reaction, maintaining they were not bed bugs.
Flight home and refund request
Unable to sleep again, Mobina flew home, spending an extra £40 on a flight back to the UK. After returning, she submitted complaints to Jet2 requesting a refund, but the company said they could not verify the bites originated from the accommodation. Jet2 said they take such complaints "very seriously" and are investigating further.
Mobina said: "I arrived after midnight. The room was very dirty but I decided to sort it out in the morning, it had hair everywhere. After a few hours of sleeping, my body was itching and I was confused. I turned the lights on and there were so many bugs."
She described red bumps on her breast area, neck, chin, behind her ears, legs and arms, with at least 20 on her arms, "probably 100 in total". She said it was like having chicken pox, painful and mostly itchy.
Trauma and vow to avoid Jet2
Mobina tried contacting Jet2 via live chat but was told to address the matter with the hotel directly. After three months, Jet2 called to apologise but said they could not prove the bugs were caused by the accommodation.
She said: "I'm traumatised because I'm scared of insects and spiders. If I see a spider, I cry, it's my worst fear." She has vowed never to book trips through Jet2 again, saying she is "scared at night" and will never go solo travelling again.
A Jet2 spokesperson said: "We're very sorry to hear about Ms Atashi's experience. We take concerns like these very seriously and we are investigating in further detail. We will contact Ms Atashi directly once this investigation is complete."
