A travel expert has identified Sopot, a coastal city on Poland's Baltic coast, as a cheaper alternative to Barcelona that he predicts will soon become a major hotspot. Rob Brooks, who works for travel agent On The Beach, shared his discovery on TikTok, calling it 'Eastern Europe's Barcelona' and noting it costs a fraction of the price of popular Mediterranean destinations.
Why Sopot is Being Called the 'Barcelona of Eastern Europe'
Brooks explained that Sopot offers a similar vibe to Barcelona but at half the cost. 'It's half the price, around a two-hour flight from the UK, it's brilliant for families and it can even feel like proper luxury if you book smart,' he said in his video. He noted a sudden explosion in holiday searches for the destination, which led him to investigate further.
The town boasts a huge golden sandy beach, beachfront bars and restaurants, colourful streets, beautiful architecture, luxury hotels, and a massive pier stretching into the sea. Brooks admitted he initially considered it a 'rogue place' for a seaside break but changed his mind after seeing photos.
Affordable Flights and Accommodation
Direct flights from British airports take as little as two hours and five minutes, with Brooks finding one for as little as £36. He highlighted a specific deal: five nights at the Hotel Aqua beside the beach for £265 per person, including flights from London Stansted Airport this September. 'You're getting Barcelona's beach culture, but for Poland's prices,' he stated.
What Sopot Offers
Brooks praised the variety Sopot offers: 'You can spend the morning on the beach, wander around beautiful old streets in the afternoon, eat ridiculously well and eat gorgeous food without spending a fortune.' Summer temperatures reach up to 26°C, making it an ideal summer getaway. He concluded, 'I really don't think this place will stay a secret for much longer.'
Sopot's tourism website describes it as 'one of the most charming places in Poland and a hugely popular Baltic resort,' offering abundant greenery, beautiful sandy beaches, spa architecture, and top-class hotels and restaurants.
Social Media Reactions
Response to Brooks' video has been positive. One TikTok user commented, 'It's a beautiful place, I was there in May. Gdansk is just along the way which is even better. Definitely worth a visit.' Another added, 'Sopot is a beautiful town and so is neighbouring Gdynia. Both towns are within a short commute of the larger city of Gdansk, which is also a marvel. Very clean environment, moderate prices to eat out and drink and very well worth a visit.' A third user wrote, 'Sopot is stunning, we had a great time earlier this year. We stayed in Gdansk which is about 15 minutes by train. I couldn't recommend both places enough.'
