Six Flags New Jersey Commences Construction on Groundbreaking Roller Coaster

Construction has officially begun on a new record-breaking roller coaster at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson Township, New Jersey. This highly anticipated attraction is set to replace the park's legendary Kingda Ka, which was demolished last year. The amusement park released video footage this week showing crews unloading sections of the ride's distinctive purple track from trucks and using cranes to lift massive pieces into place.

A New Chapter for the Amusement Park

The park's social media announcement, captioned "Welcome to the next chapter" with hashtags #AdventureAwakens and #SFGAD2027, strongly suggests that the new coaster is scheduled to open in 2027. Park officials have emphasised in a news release that this mysterious new attraction will "become one of the most impactful additions in our park's history." While the exact name and layout remain under wraps, the coaster has been promoted as a "multi-world-record-breaking launch roller coaster" since its initial announcement in 2024.

Replacing Beloved Rides

Both Kingda Ka and the Green Lantern roller coaster were demolished in 2025 to make room for this new development. Kingda Ka, which opened in 2005, held the title of the world's tallest and fastest roller coaster, launching riders 45 stories into the air from 0 to 128 mph in mere seconds. Its removal marked the end of an era for thrill-seekers, with the coaster being imploded on February 28, 2025.

Brian Bacica, the park's president, acknowledged the emotional impact of these changes in a 2024 statement, saying, "We understand that saying goodbye to beloved rides can be difficult, and we appreciate our guests' passion. These changes are an important part of our growth and dedication to delivering exceptional new experiences. We look forward to sharing more details next summer."

Additional Park Upgrades for 2026

In addition to the new record-breaking coaster, Six Flags Great Adventure is implementing several other attractions and upgrades for the 2026 season. Key enhancements include:

  • The Safari Off-Road Adventure will return to being included with regular admission.
  • Visitors can expect expanded live entertainment and upgraded dining options.
  • Major track improvements are planned for the park's signature El Toro wooden coaster.

Furthermore, Six Flags is introducing a new regional access benefit for Gold Passholders and Members during the 2026 season. This change allows them to visit any park within their region, replacing the previous rule that limited passes to a single home park. These regional benefits are being rolled out gradually this month, with Gold Passes automatically updated to include access to all parks within each active region.

Financial Context and Broader Investments

These exciting developments come as Six Flags continues to navigate financial challenges following its 2024 merger with Cedar Fair. The company reported a $320 million loss in early 2025 and a 9 percent drop in attendance during the second quarter of 2025. Despite a modest rebound in July and August, revenue remained down 2 percent.

Amid considerations to close some parks, the company is still investing in new attractions across its portfolio. For instance, the Tormenta Rampaging Run at Six Flags Over Texas is being billed as the "tallest, fastest and longest" dive coaster in the world. Six Flags Great Adventure is set to open for the 2026 season on March 28, offering guests a blend of nostalgic upgrades and groundbreaking new thrills.
