Long-haul flights can leave anyone feeling stiff and sluggish, but older passengers are particularly prone to discomfort. Inspiring Vacations has teamed up with Pilates instructor Brittany Tatterson to share simple movements that can be done while seated on a plane.
Brittany advises performing seated movements every 30 to 60 minutes, and standing or walking every one to two hours if possible. "Many people wait until they already feel stiff, but by that point the body has already tightened and circulation has slowed," she explains. The exercises require minimal space and can be done discreetly.
Recommended moves include gently tilting the pelvis forward and backward to engage the core and relieve lower back pressure. Keeping toes on the floor and lifting heels up and down helps encourage leg circulation. Breathing exercises—inhaling through the nose to expand the ribs and exhaling slowly—can improve energy levels.
Neck movements such as gentle nods, turns and tilts ease tension from screen use and poor posture. Clenching and releasing the glutes supports the pelvis and reduces lower back strain without attracting attention. Brittany emphasises moving slowly and mindfully to be considerate of fellow passengers and for greater effectiveness.
