Saltmoore, a new hotel on the Yorkshire coast, opened in November 2024 following a £100m redevelopment of the former Raithwaite Estate. The 19th-century country retreat, once owned by a local shipping magnate, has been transformed into a contemporary retreat by Love Island's Montana Brown and her fiancé Mark O'Connor.
The hotel is a 10-minute walk from Sandsend beach and two and a half miles northwest of Whitby. Set within 85 acres of landscaped gardens and a lake, the main house feels cosy. The colour palette is earthy and muted, reflecting the nearby moors and sands, with heather, gorse and greens throughout.
Saltmoore has 72 rooms: 43 in the main house and 29 in the Beach House. Master rooms include four-poster beds, freestanding bathtubs and rainforest showers. Suites offer outdoor terraces and bathtubs. All rooms have ghd or Dyson hairdryers, Wildsmith products, Egyptian cotton sheets and smart TVs.
The Michelin Guide-recommended Brasserie, headed by Adam Maddock, focuses on classic dishes using local Yorkshire produce. The Sunday roast features beef cured in black treacle, fluffy Yorkshire puddings and ample gravy. Breakfast is served in the light-filled Orangerie, where dried-flower garlands hang from the ceiling.
The Sanctuary Spa is the hotel's highlight, with a 17-metre indoor pool and natural light. The spa team are welcoming, and the overall atmosphere promotes rest and recuperation, with no loud music. Other facilities include The Beach House for pizza and pasta, a Wellness Cafe, and a planned fine-dining restaurant, Calluna, opening in 2026.
