According to recent travel reports, searches for smaller cities are up 35% globally, with travellers prioritising depth over distance and value over spectacle.
Slovenia has emerged as a standout choice, offering Alpine scenery akin to Switzerland or northern Italy at significantly lower prices. Luxury operator Unforgettable Travel Company reports a 286% year-on-year rise in bookings, with Slovenia 15% cheaper than Austria and 25% cheaper than Switzerland. The country's compact size allows visitors to enjoy lake swims, wine tastings, and mountain views within a few hours' drive.
Latvia is another budget-friendly option, with average August room nights at €93 compared to €186 in Denmark. The capital Riga is 34% cheaper than Berlin and 50% cheaper than Oslo, while offering a Nordic-style city break with a cooler climate. Dinner for two at a smart-casual restaurant costs €50-70.
Other affordable destinations include Albania and Lithuania, where short-term rental prices remain below €100 per night, and Croatia's lesser-known islands like Korčula provide the Adriatic experience without the crowds of Dubrovnik. Experts advise that even in popular countries, stepping beyond the main capitals can yield a more authentic and less hectic holiday.
