Alton Towers Smiler Ride Victims Sue Park Owners

Two women who lost legs in the Alton Towers Smiler ride crash are suing the park's owners, their lawyers have confirmed. Vicky Balch, 23, and Leah Washington, 20, were in the front seats when the ride rammed into a stationary carriage in June 2015.

The High Court claim for negligence and breach of statutory duty could see each receive compensation 'well in excess of £2m' if successful. Merlin Attractions Operations Ltd has already admitted breaching the Health and Safety Act and was fined £5m in 2016.

Lawyer Paul Paxton stated: 'Our clients suffered life-changing injuries... financial security can at least help the victims to lead a full and active life.' A Merlin spokesman said the filing was procedural to preserve rights within the three-year limitation period, adding that the company has provided interim payments.

Judge Michael Chambers QC described the crash on the £18m attraction as a 'catastrophic failure' and 'needless and avoidable accident.' Two other victims, Meera Chauhan and Vanisha Singh, are also preparing legal action.
