In the heart of central Portugal’s Lousã mountains lies Talasnal, a village so tranquil it is home to just one person. Former TV reporter Panni Anikó Cser visited the remote settlement and shared her experience on TikTok, introducing followers to Jorge, the sole inhabitant who also runs the village bar.
Jorge, who serves customers from behind the counter of Bar o Curral, explained that the village once housed over 200 people. “Then, in the 1950s and 1960s, people started to leave and the village became completely abandoned,” he said. His own move came after his son, a Scout, camped there with his group and told him about the site. “I visited and fell in love with the village,” Jorge recalled.
Despite its tiny population, Talasnal has seen a revival thanks to a community renovation project in the early 2000s. Guesthouses and small restaurants now draw hikers and tourists, providing Jorge with a living. He often cooks chanfana, a regional dish, for visitors. The bar itself has a 3.9 rating on TripAdvisor from 10 reviews, with one guest calling it “a 100 per cent Portuguese experience that warmed the heart.”
Social media users have been charmed by Jorge’s story, with one joking they would watch a “24-hour documentary” about him and another vowing to visit before they die. The Lousã region promotes nature tourism, walking routes, river beaches, and historic sites, but it’s this one-man village that has captured imaginations.
Jorge summed up his life simply: “I’m the only resident – the only one with a mailbox.”
