A classic meat and potato pie has been crowned the supreme champion at this year's British Pie Awards, beating more than 800 other entries across 23 categories. The winning pie, made by Bowring Butchers based in Nottinghamshire, impressed judges with its 'crisp yet rich pastry' and 'mouth-wateringly creamy sauce'.
The competition, held in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, saw the vegan category prove the most popular with 72 entries, though no vegan pie took the top prize this year. In 2019, a curried sweet potato and butternut squash pastry won the overall award.
The runners-up were a rhubarb and custard dessert pie from Mad K Pies in Portsmouth and an authentic Melton Mowbray pork pie by Dickinson & Morris. Matthew O'Callaghan, host of the awards and chairman of the Melton Mowbray Pork Pie Association, said: 'Each and every year it is fantastic to see the range of delicious pies submitted to the British Pie Awards and this year was no different.'
He added: 'Bowring Butchers submitted a truly scrumptious pie, and it was agreed across the board that their classic meat and potato masterpiece was the supreme champion of 2021.'
