Passport Mistake That Could Ruin Your Holiday: Not Enough Blank Pages

While many travellers are aware of the need for sufficient passport validity, a lesser-known requirement could derail your holiday: having too few blank pages. Some countries, particularly in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, require two to four blank visa or stamp pages, and airlines may deny boarding if your passport does not meet these rules.

Travel influencer @remoteroams shared on TikTok that she and her partner were unable to travel to Cambodia because her son George’s passport lacked enough blank pages. Another influencer, @Hales, had to visit the US Embassy in Ireland after being warned by passport control that she might not be able to continue her European trip without a new passport.

Namibia demands the most blank pages: six. Other countries requiring three or more include Botswana, Mozambique, Zambia, Brunei, South Africa, and Madagascar. Destinations such as The Bahamas, Cuba, China, Singapore, and India require at least two blank pages.

However, the European Union is phasing out manual stamping with its Entry/Exit System (EES), which records biometric data digitally. Fully implemented by April 2026, this will eliminate the need for blank pages in Schengen area countries like Denmark, Greece, Italy, and Portugal.

Experts recommend always travelling with at least two blank pages. Frequent flyers can apply for a ‘jumbo passport’ with 54 pages instead of the standard 34. Always check specific requirements before travelling to avoid being caught out.
