A visit to Palermo, Sicily, left one traveler impressed by the food but disappointed by the city's charm, ultimately concluding it was overrated. The capital of Italy's largest island promised ancient ruins, beautiful beaches, and incredible cuisine, but the reality fell short of expectations.
Outstanding Food in Palermo
The food was the highlight of the trip. Pasta was described as juicy and fresh with a perfect bite, swimming in silky sauces. Seafood was fresh, with mussels served with fried bruschetta and a garlicky tomato sauce that the author still thinks about. The semi-frozen dessert granita was perfect for the humid August heat.
For atmospheric streets and dining options, Via Maqueda and La Vucciria were recommended. These areas offered plenty of restaurants and vibrant street life.
Main Sights Tick Off in Half a Day
However, aside from the food, the main sights—cathedrals, markets, fountains, and historic buildings—were ticked off in around half a day. The main strip to Quattro Canti, the famous Baroque crossroads, felt surprisingly grid-like and lacked the old-world charm expected. The author had hoped for tiny cobbled streets and charming corners typical of Italian cities.
By lunchtime, the author and companion were silently thinking the city wasn't as charming as hoped and wondered what to do with the rest of their time.
Day Trips to Beaches and Towns
Day trips were planned to fill the time. Mondello Beach was beautiful, with warm water, many restaurants, and a backdrop of mountains, just a short bus ride from Palermo's center. Cefalù, a coastal town, offered boutique shops, a plaza in front of the cathedral, and choices between a cove beach and a stretch of sand.
Cala Sant’Elia, closer to Palermo, had crystal-clear water in little coves surrounded by mountains. However, all three locations were packed with people and littered with rubbish, and the beaches were quite small.
Verdict: Not Recommended
While Sicily is naturally beautiful, with mountains and sea everywhere, the author would not return nor particularly recommend Palermo. Similar delicious food can be found in other Italian cities on the mainland with more small-town charm and sights within the town itself, avoiding the need for day trips. Empty beaches are also available elsewhere in the world.
For those desperate to visit Palermo for the food, the author understands but advises against going in August to avoid the crowds and to plan day trips.
