Northumberland National Park welcomed 1.79 million visitors in 2025, surpassing pre-pandemic levels for the first time and contributing £146 million to the North East tourism industry, according to the annual STEAM report.
Record visitor numbers and economic impact
The 2025 figure represents a 6.7% increase on the previous year, with the wider North East region attracting over 70 million visitors overall, generating a tourism economy worth £7.13 billion. The national park accounts for nearly 10% of Northumberland's total visitor spend, which is valued at £1.58 billion.
Day visits continue to dominate, making up more than 95% of all trips. However, staying visitor numbers rose to 61,000 in 2025, the highest level since 2022.
Park leaders highlight appeal and charm
David Renwick, chief executive officer at Northumberland National Park, said: "These figures show the important role Northumberland National Park has in the North East economy, supporting local jobs, rural businesses and communities while helping people experience nature, heritage and some of the country's most inspiring landscapes."
Astrotourism a key draw
One of the park's major attractions is astrotourism, with large sections designated as a Dark Sky Park since 2013. At last count, astrotourism was valued at £25 million to the park, though that figure is likely higher now due to inflation and increased visitor numbers.
70th anniversary celebrations
This year marks the park's 70th anniversary since its designation, with a photography exhibition held in March to celebrate the occasion.
