Monica Stott, 37, a mum-of-three from Wrexham, took her 11-year-old son on a 24-hour birthday trip to Paris for £300, claiming it was cheaper than a 'bog standard' party in the UK. The jam-packed trip included iconic sights like the Eiffel Tower and Louvre, and they were back home in bed by 11pm.
Cost Comparison: Paris vs. Party in Wales
Monica explained that a typical class party to the cinema, bowling, or soft play in the UK costs around £250 or more. 'I know young children don't remember everything, so it seemed a bit pointless to spend hundreds on a party no one will remember,' she said. The Paris trip, costing £300 for both, offered a memorable alternative.
Itinerary and Highlights
The trip started the night before with a flight and a £100 hotel stay. The next morning, they enjoyed free breakfast and visited Sacre-Coeur, Place du Tertre (pastries and hot chocolates for £8), the Louvre, Tuileries Garden, the Eiffel Tower (top deck viewing tickets £32), and a River Seine cruise (£15). They also had coffee and crepes (£15), lunch (£8), and dinner (£20). Public transport cost £27, and flights were £70 return. Total: £299.
Family Reaction and Tips
Monica's other children were excited for their own birthday trips and barely noticed the absence. Her tips for extreme day trips include arriving the night before, packing light, pre-booking tickets, and using public transport. She has previously visited Reykjavik, Amsterdam, and Alicante for under £100. 'Travel doesn't have to be a luxury only for the rich,' she added.
