Washing machine owners have been issued an alert as the summer holiday season approaches, with appliance experts warning that failing to prepare could lead to mould, unpleasant odours, and higher energy bills. A new survey reveals that nearly one fifth of travellers have returned home to find something has gone wrong while they were away, including burst pipes, defrosted freezers, and mouldy food.
Why Preparation Matters
The study found that two thirds of travellers have a set routine of preparations around their homes before taking off on holiday, but many overlook their washing machines. Salah Sun, head of product at Hotpoint, said: “Spending some time in the days leading up to your holiday to prep your appliances could help you save on your energy bills and prevent unwelcome surprises upon your return.”
Key Steps to Prevent Mould and Odours
To prevent mould and unpleasant odours from developing in your washing machine while you are away, experts recommend running an empty hot cycle with a washing machine cleaner before leaving. “By doing this you’ll return to a fresh smelling machine,” Sun added.
Appliance experts at Candy also suggest removing the filter and cleaning it with a toothbrush to ensure nothing is stuck inside. Wiping the seal down with a white vinegar solution helps prevent mould, and leaving the door slightly ajar allows airflow to stop smells from developing.
Energy Savings from Switching Off
Sun advised switching the washing machine off at the wall before heading off, along with other appliances such as the dishwasher, tumble dryer, microwave, kettle, and coffee machine. “Appliances that heat water are particularly costly to leave on standby because they need to be ready to heat water instantly on demand. The collective effect of multiple appliances in standby mode can add pounds to your energy bill if you’re on holiday for a fortnight,” he explained.
Television sets, computer monitors, printers, and various countertop gadgets also continue drawing power when left on standby, so disconnecting them completely can maximise savings.
