Mary Queen of Scots' Borders castle is Airbnb of the Week

The Daily Record's latest Airbnb of the Week is not only absolutely beautiful, but it also has major historical significance. The castle, which has been described as "perhaps the most romantic place to stay in the Scottish Borders", was once visited by Mary, Queen of Scots.

Historic castle near Peebles

Neidpath Castle is a magnificent centuries-old tower house overlooking the River Tweed, located around a mile out of the charming town of Peebles. Sleeping up to two adults, an overnight stay at the castle can be booked through Airbnb at a price of £464 at the moment.

The historic property was visited by Mary, Queen of Scots in 1563, as well as her son James VI in 1587. You can stay in the very chamber where the monarch once slept, with the en-suite room coming with a fabulous antique four-poster bed and an impressive open fireplace.

Castle features and dining

Guests at Neidpath Castle can privately explore the whole castle, before retiring to their bedroom. Standout features include a deep roll-top bath and an elegant table that is set for breakfast, while there is a small kitchenette with a fridge, a kettle, and provisions for a continental breakfast.

Peebles is around just 10 minutes away from the castle on foot, and is home to a wide variety of restaurants offering all kinds of cuisine. Dinner can also be served at Neidpath Castle itself by prior arrangement, although this is subject to availability of the private chef.

Guest review and pet policy

Pets are welcome at Neidpath Castle for an additional fee of £35, meaning your four-legged friend can come along too. However, because the castle is an A Listed building, guests must keep dogs under close supervision and clean up any waste in the grounds before leaving.

One recent Airbnb guest wrote: "We will never forget staying in our own castle with such a rich history. The town of Peebles is lovely, small and peaceful. The trails right next to the castle provided beautiful walks along the river everyday. I miss those mornings the most. Oh, and make sure to reserve the private chef at least once.

"I wish we reserved them every night. So so delicious and friendly with advice and recommendations for the area. But the Venison Wellington was fantastic. The bed was very comfy, and the tub in the room is very romantic."
