London's Iconic Wolseley Restaurant Announces Global Expansion with First Hotel in New York

An iconic London restaurant is embarking on a major international venture with the launch of its first-ever hotel, scheduled to open in 2027. The Wolseley, situated in the prestigious heart of Mayfair, is widely celebrated as London's inaugural modern Grand Café. Established in 2003 within a meticulously restored 1920s building, the venue originally served as a Wolseley Motors showroom before transitioning into a Barclays Bank. Today, it stands as an upscale restaurant infused with Venetian elegance, offering a European-style all-day dining experience. Its menu is famed for iconic breakfasts, afternoon teas, and classic dishes such as schnitzels and Welsh rarebit.

Historic New York Location and Luxurious Amenities

Now, under the stewardship of its parent company, Minor Hotels, The Wolseley has revealed its global debut with its inaugural hotel in New York City. The Wolseley Hotel New York is poised to open in early 2027 at 130 West 44th Street in Midtown Manhattan, conveniently located just minutes from Times Square and Bryant Park. The historic building, originally constructed in 1905 as the clubhouse for The Lambs—America's first professional theatrical club—was designed by the esteemed architectural firm McKim, Mead & White.

The new hotel will feature 76 guest rooms and suites, artfully blending classic British charm with contemporary luxury and the vibrant cultural energy of New York. Alongside a speakeasy cellar bar and a dedicated wellness and wellbeing centre, the hotel will include a brasserie designed to encapsulate the famous all-day European dining atmosphere of the original London landmark. Guests will be able to indulge in the restaurant's signature dishes and cocktails within a vibrant yet refined setting.

Vision for Global Growth and Culinary Excellence

Dillip Rajakarier, chief executive of Minor International, the owner of Minor Hotels, expressed enthusiasm about this new chapter. Inspired by the enduring success of The Wolseley in London, our vision is to create hotels anchored in culinary excellence, architectural character, and a genuine sense of occasion. The Wolseley Hotel New York establishes our first flagship and sets the standard for the brand's global expansion.'

In an interview with The Times, Rajakarier further hinted that if successful, the New York property would serve as a launchpad for expanding The Wolseley to other global destinations. He added, 'The US is a key market for us and it’s so well-versed with the Wolseley.' Aviv Laurence, CEO of owner BJGH, also commented, 'Introducing The Wolseley restaurant and bar to the United States through our New York flagship is a defining moment. Together with Minor Hotels, we are creating a destination that celebrates heritage, hospitality, and the enduring appeal of classic European luxury.'

Background and Future Expansion Plans

The journey to this expansion began in 2017 when Minor International assumed control of The Wolseley following its acquisition of Corbin & King, the hospitality group founded by Jeremy King and Chris Corbin. Despite launching the iconic restaurant in 2003, alongside other notable London eateries like Brasserie Zédel and The Delaunay, the founders were eventually compelled to depart after the Bangkok-based firm secured a majority stake.

Looking ahead, the group has ambitious plans to open at least five new locations within the next seven years. This expansion strategy includes additional sites in the UK and two confirmed locations in the Middle East, signalling a robust commitment to growing The Wolseley brand on a global scale.
