Llandudno Pier has been named UK Pier of the Year for 2025 by the National Piers Society, coming ahead of Swanage in second and Herne Bay in third. The last time the pier took the top spot was 20 years ago, in 2005.
The award comes after a challenging winter when Storm Darragh caused severe damage to the pier in December 2023, including a hut blown across the boardwalk and major slate roof damage. Parts of the pier were closed for months, but judges praised the swift response from owners, staff, and the community in carrying out repairs in record time.
Society chairman Tim Wardley said: 'Members were highly impressed with the way everyone pulled together to get the pier re-opened. It really shows what a valuable and much-loved asset the pier is.' NPS Patron Gyles Brandreth added: 'Three cheers for Llandudno! Enjoy this fantastic North Wales pier as it basks in the glory of Pier of the Year.'
General manager Paul Williams said: 'We are overjoyed. In the past 18 months, huge investment has been made by our parent company, Tir Prince Leisure Group, in steel pile replacements and decking repairs. Work also continues on reopening the Happy Valley entrance.' He thanked the local community, rugby and football clubs, and the Williams family who purchased the pier in 2015.
The pier, a major tourist attraction in North Wales, employs hundreds of locals and supports local charities. The award highlights its resilience and importance to the area.
