Korean Traveller's London Visit Reveals Surprising Cultural Contrasts

A visitor from Korea who embarked on a five-day solo trip to London has expressed astonishment at a major difference he observed in the city's inhabitants. The traveller, who had previously visited only ten cities outside Asia including Frankfurt, Paris, Rome, and Los Angeles, described London as "the most vibrant" destination he had ever experienced.

A Harmonious and Pleasant Urban Environment

The Korean tourist highlighted that coming from a nation with relatively limited diversity, he had primarily encountered multiculturalism through online platforms like Reddit. However, in London, he found the atmosphere to be genuinely peaceful and harmonious. He remarked that walking around the city was surprisingly pleasant, noting that despite London's frequent rainfall, the stone pavements were not overly slippery and were very well-maintained.

"I had just come from Rome, and although I really liked Italy, the sidewalks there were very uneven and poorly maintained, so I was worried London might be similar," the traveller explained. "But to be honest, the sidewalks in London were actually very well-kept." He also praised the London Underground, describing it as narrow and small but efficient due to the frequent train arrivals.

Packed Itinerary and Meaningful Experiences

During his five-day stay, the visitor packed his schedule with numerous iconic attractions. He visited the British Museum, the V&A Museum, the Natural History Museum, the National Gallery, Tower of London, St. Paul’s Cathedral, and Westminster Abbey. Using a one-day London Pass, he managed to see the Tower of London, St. Paul’s Cathedral, and Westminster Abbey all in a single day, which he found made the experience more affordable, albeit with a tight schedule.

At Westminster Abbey, after completing his tour, he noticed a queue forming for the 5 p.m. service, which is free to enter. He joined the line and attended, describing it as a meaningful experience. "The service didn’t include communion, but the choir’s singing was beautiful, and the historic setting gave it a solemn atmosphere," he said. He appreciated having visited separately earlier, as photography and wandering around the royal tombs were prohibited during the service.

The Stunning Difference: London's Rapid Pace

However, one aspect of London life truly surprised the Korean traveller: the speed at which everyone moves. He observed that escalators in the city moved approximately 1.5 times faster than those in Korea, and people walked at a notably quick pace. "Since I’m already a slow walker back home, keeping pace with others in London often left me out of breath without realizing it," he explained.

This observation underscores a fascinating cultural contrast, where the efficiency and briskness of Londoners stood out as a defining characteristic. The traveller also noted that even the typically gloomy London weather did not dampen his experience, as he found everyone to be genuinely kind and cheerful.

Overall, his trip highlighted not only the architectural and historical wonders of London but also the dynamic, fast-paced lifestyle of its residents, leaving him with a profound impression of the city's unique energy and inclusive spirit.
