Dozens of British families have fallen ill after staying at the Mukarnas Resort and Spa Hotel in Antalya, Turkey, and are taking Jet2 Holidays to court. The five-star resort has been linked to gastric illnesses that have left holidaymakers suffering for months.
Marie Brereton, 55, from Derby, booked a week-long holiday at the resort in May 2022 for over £2,000. Three days into the trip, she and her son Ben, then 17, developed severe stomach pain. They were directed to a medical centre over 40 minutes away, but Ben remained unwell for over three months, even sitting a GCSE exam with access to a toilet. Marie's illness lasted two months, requiring GP visits.
Marie criticised the resort's hygiene, noting a lack of hand gel, dirty toilets, and cleaners not wearing gloves. She said, 'The hygiene in the resort wasn't great... To this day the tour operator is continuing to drag their heels.'
Irwin Mitchell, the law firm representing 100 families, has filed High Court proceedings. Lawyer Jatinder Paul stated, 'It's very concerning to hear how many people, including young children, fell seriously ill... Gastric illness can be very serious and should never be downplayed.' The legal action alleges Jet2 Holidays was negligent by continuing to send holidaymakers to the resort despite known outbreaks.
Jet2 Holidays has denied liability in all 100 cases. The families seek answers and compensation for their ruined holidays and ongoing health issues.
