The Isle of Harris in Scotland has been named the sixth quietest place in the world for a summer holiday, according to travel experts at Solmar Villas. The study analysed more than 160 locations to identify the best uncrowded escapes, and Harris was the only UK destination to make the top ten.
Location and Population
Harris forms the southern part of the island of Harris and Lewis in Scotland's Outer Hebrides. Despite being the third largest island in the British Isles, it has a population of just 20,500 residents. Its pristine white-sand beaches, striking scenery, and sparse population make it one of Britain's most secluded summer staycation destinations.
Luskentyre Beach
Among the island's most celebrated attractions is Luskentyre Beach, which regularly features on lists of the world's finest beaches. This expansive stretch of brilliant white sand resembles a Caribbean beach, though the waters are cooler. Located on the northern coast of South Harris, it is sheltered by the island of Taransay. Visitors can spot dolphins, seals, otters, eagles, and occasionally whales while strolling along the sand.
Travel and Accessibility
The Isle of Harris offers a peaceful summer getaway without the hassle of airport security or costly international flights. Ferries operate daily from the Scottish mainland, and vehicles can be transported, allowing visitors to explore the island thoroughly.
Expert Comment
Sharon Bradbury, a travel expert at Solmar Villas, said: "Many families don't have the option of travelling outside the school holidays, so choosing the right destination becomes even more important. What stands out from this research is that some of the world's most enjoyable summer destinations don't necessarily attract the biggest crowds. For families looking to make the most of their summer break, it can be worth looking beyond the usual hotspots. A quieter destination often means a more relaxed experience from the moment you arrive."
