Iran War Sparks Flight Disruptions and Rising Costs for Australian Travellers

Australians planning to fly to Europe for the northern summer are confronting significant uncertainty over routes, safety, and escalating prices as the war in the Middle East continues to impact global air travel. Major airlines, including popular choices like Emirates and Qatar Airways, are operating limited flights while managing passenger backlogs in hubs such as Dubai and Doha.

How the Conflict is Reshaping Travel Behaviour

Zara Zarezadeh, a tourism lecturer at Griffith University, explains that international events like conflicts inevitably influence tourist decisions. "Travellers often adjust their plans rather than cancel entirely, opting for alternative destinations or safer transit hubs," she says. For Australians, this shift is likely towards Asian airports, particularly Singapore, though such routes may lead to longer flying times, more connections, or increased costs for direct flights perceived as safer.

Zarezadeh notes that many Australians are now booking their European summer holidays, with some considering alternatives like southern Asia, Japan, or New Zealand. "These destinations are safer, closer, and cheaper, even if they are not direct substitutes for Europe," she adds. This trend is mirrored among European travellers planning trips to Australia, affecting tourism flows in both directions.

Airlines Respond with Route Adjustments and Fare Hikes

Qantas has reported high demand for European routes, with flights operating at over 90% capacity in March, about 15 percentage points higher than usual. The airline has temporarily altered its non-stop Perth to London service to include a refuelling stop in Singapore, allowing an extra 60 passengers per flight. Additionally, Qantas announced fare increases across international routes due to rising costs, including jet fuel prices.

Singapore Airlines, while not commenting on specific route demand, indicated that flights between Singapore and Australia/New Zealand are averaging more than 91% capacity. Tourism Australia is monitoring the situation closely, with managing director Robin Mack stating, "Whilst there has been some disruption to air travel, Australia continues to welcome visitors from around the world."

Travel Insurance Exclusions and Safety Warnings

Travel insurance poses another challenge, as policies typically exclude coverage for losses due to war. Southern Cross Travel Insurance confirmed this exclusion, with chief customer officer Jess Strange advising travellers to prioritise safety. "Travel insurers have a general exclusion when it comes to war, meaning they cannot cover costs from such events," she says, though coverage may still apply for unrelated incidents.

Australia's Smartraveller website has issued warnings, listing many Middle Eastern countries, including Israel, Iran, and the UAE, as "do not travel" destinations. A recent report from Southern Cross found that nearly two-thirds of Australians cite politics as a key reason to avoid certain locations, with interest in the US and Middle East declining even before the Iran war.

Personal Experiences Highlight Growing Anxiety

Tony Unsworth, a British visitor to Australia, expressed nervousness about his upcoming return flight via Dubai with Emirates. "We're a bit nervous about whether the flight will still touch down in Dubai," he says, preferring a reroute through Singapore. Unsworth has held off on seeking alternatives, noting that airlines are likely overwhelmed with immediate concerns.

As the conflict persists, travellers are urged to stay informed and book early to secure the best deals, with experts predicting continued volatility in air travel and costs throughout the summer season.
