Milos: The Greek Island Still 24°C in October Without the Santorini Crowds

Travel experts are recommending the Greek island of Milos as an ideal off-season escape, with daytime temperatures around 24°C in October. While Britain sees temperatures drop to the low 10s, Milos offers warm weather and fewer tourists than popular destinations like Santorini.

Known as the 'Island of Colours', Milos boasts volcanic cliffs, turquoise waters, and traditional villages such as Klima and Mandrakia. The island features over 70 beaches, including Sarakiniko with its moon-like white volcanic rock, and Tsigrado Beach, accessible via a rope ladder. Quiet spots like Agia Kyriaki and Paliochori are perfect for relaxation.

The capital, Plaka, is a hilltop town with narrow cobbled streets and whitewashed homes, offering some of the best sunset views in the Aegean. Local cuisine includes grilled seafood, pitarakia (cheese pies), and honey-soaked desserts, best enjoyed with local wine.

Visitors can explore Kleftiko and Sykia caves by boat, see the Roman theatre, and walk through early Christian catacombs. The Mining Museum details the island's mineral heritage, while villages like Pollonia, Tripiti, and Zefyria showcase authentic Cycladic life.

Milos is significant in art history: the Venus de Milo, Poseidon of Melos, and Asclepius of Milos were all discovered here. The island has a small airport with 45-minute flights from Athens, or ferries from Piraeus Port taking three to five hours. Connections from Santorini, Paros, and Naxos are also available.
