A suspected gas cylinder explosion has caused a catastrophic fire at a nightclub in India's coastal state of Goa, killing at least 25 people and injuring several others. The tragedy struck the popular tourist region in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Kitchen Blast Sparks Deadly Inferno
Local police believe the devastating blaze originated in the kitchen of the nightclub, known as Birch by Romeo Lane, located in the Arpora area near Baga beach. A gas cylinder explosion around midnight on Saturday is thought to be the cause, with flames rapidly engulfing the venue.
Goa's Director General of Police, Alok Kumar, stated that the fire was largely concentrated on the ground floor kitchen area. He confirmed that authorities worked through the night to bring the situation under control and that all bodies had been recovered from the scene.
Victims Include Club Workers and Tourists
The majority of those who lost their lives were kitchen staff employed at the club, who were tragically caught at the epicentre of the blast. Goa's Chief Minister, Pramod Sawant, confirmed that three to four tourists were also among the dead.
"Most of the bodies were found around the kitchen suggesting that the victims were employed at the club," Mr Kumar told reporters. In addition to the 25 fatalities, six people were injured and taken to hospital, where they are reported to be in a stable condition and receiving medical care.
Official Response and Inquiry Launched
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant visited the scene, describing the event as a "very painful day for all of us in Goa." He has ordered a magisterial inquiry to determine the exact cause of the fire and to scrutinise whether fire safety norms and building regulations were properly followed at the venue.
"Those found responsible will face most stringent action under the law- any negligence will be dealt with firmly," Sawant stated in a post on social media platform X. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his sadness, stating he had spoken with the Chief Minister about the situation and that the state government was providing all possible assistance to those affected.
The incident has cast a shadow over North Goa, a region famed for its beaches and vibrant nightlife, raising urgent questions about safety standards in hospitality venues.
