Cally Brooks, a news reporter in her twenties, embarked on her first-ever cruise with low expectations. Boarding MSC Virtuosa in Southampton for a seven-night sailing to the Norwegian Fjords, she anticipated a week surrounded by older passengers. Within hours of stepping on board, her opinion was made up: the stereotype was wrong.
First Impressions: A Diverse Crowd
Families with babies and toddlers filled the pools, teenagers queued for the arcade, groups of friends enjoyed cocktails, couples celebrated anniversaries, and honeymooners watched sunsets from balconies. Older guests were present but formed just one part of a mixed crowd. MSC Virtuosa, built in 2021, carries up to 6,334 guests and 1,704 crew members, functioning as a floating city with non-stop activity.
The heart of the ship is the Galleria Virtuosa, an indoor promenade lined with bars, restaurants, boutiques, and entertainment venues beneath a spectacular LED ceiling. It always felt alive.
Food Highlights: Butcher's Cut and Robot Bartenders
Food quickly became a highlight. With 11 restaurants, Brooks' standout was Butcher's Cut, an American-style steakhouse serving one of the best three-course meals of the week. The buffet delivered daily, and MSC's pizzas—rooted in Italian heritage—exceeded expectations. The ship also features 16 bars, including the futuristic Starship Club with robotic bartenders. Brooks' favourite was the Sky Lounge, offering drinks overlooking the main deck, and L'Atelier Bar & Art, with live piano and Asian-inspired snacks.
Entertainment and Accommodation
The Le Grand Theatre hosted productions rivalling land-based shows, with Dirty Dancing standing out for choreography and cast. The Carousel Lounge featured breathtaking acrobatic and aerial performances. The MSC Aurea Spa offers treatments and thermal experiences, while the panoramic gym overlooks the sea. Brooks stayed in a Deluxe Balcony cabin on Deck 13, enjoying uninterrupted ocean views.
Itinerary: Edinburgh and Norwegian Ports
The itinerary included Edinburgh, Stavanger, Haugesund, and Kristiansand. Haugesund stole Brooks' heart with its charming high street, crystal-clear water, and coastal walks. Evenings featured themed nights like Gala, Tropical, and White Night, adding occasion to each evening.
By the return to Southampton, Brooks' opinion had completely changed. The biggest surprise was discovering that cruises cater to all ages. She said, "My first cruise completely disproved the stereotype I'd believed for years, and it's the reason I'd happily book another one (alongside that delicious pizza)."
