A dream holiday to one of Australia's most iconic natural wonders turned to tragedy this week when an elderly British woman in her eighties was found dead after failing to return to her cruise ship from Lizard Island.
Desperate Search Ends in Tragedy
The alarm was raised on Monday evening when the octogenarian passenger failed to return to the Coral Princess cruise vessel after a day exploring the stunning Lizard Island, located approximately 150 miles north of Cairns.
Queensland Police confirmed they launched an immediate land, air and sea search operation involving multiple agencies including the Australian Maritime Safety Authority and Lizard Island National Park rangers.
Remote Island Paradise
Lizard Island, known for its exclusive resorts and world-class diving spots, presents unique challenges for search operations due to its rugged terrain and limited infrastructure. The island forms part of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area and is accessible only by light aircraft or boat.
The woman's body was discovered on Tuesday morning in bushland near the island's research station, ending the extensive overnight search operation that had involved thermal imaging technology and multiple search teams.
