A cruise ship expert has warned passengers about common mistakes that could delay boarding, with packing prohibited items being the most significant error. Ilana Weigensberg Schattauer, host of the YouTube channel Life Well Cruised, highlighted that cruise security shares similarities with airport security, and many first-time cruisers are caught off guard.
In a video, Schattauer explained that bringing items such as irons, which are fire hazards, or non surge-protected power bars, is not permitted on most cruise ships. She also noted that weapons, ammunition, and explosives are banned, mirroring airport rules. Passengers often inadvertently pack these items, causing hold-ups at security checkpoints.
Beyond prohibited items, Schattauer listed other rookie mistakes: expecting security to be identical to an airport, arriving without downloading the cruise line's app, failing to empty pockets before X-ray machines, misunderstanding drink policies, and not being aware of sniffer dogs. She advised travellers to prepare documents in advance and familiarise themselves with the latest regulations to ensure a smooth start to their holiday.
